Three Factors to Consider When Choosing a Senior Living Facility

For many seniors, living alone can become too difficult. While it is certainly a hard choice to consider moving into a senior community, there are some great benefits to having access to the wonderful amenities these facilities offer.

Here are three factors to consider while searching for a new place to call home.

  1. Day-to-Day Amenities. Take a detailed look around the facility. Does it appear clean? How well is everything kept up, such as the landscaping and the buildings? Focusing on what the community looks like will give you an idea of the level of care they will provide to you on a daily basis. Another important day-to-day factor to consider is the food. You will be eating there every day and you need to be sure you will enjoy your food. If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, will they be able to accommodate you? Also, if you are an individual that enjoys cooking, will you be able to cook in your apartment or room?

  1. Staff. Above all, you need to get an idea of what type of services the staff will be providing. Is there someone there that can administer medications? Is someone available to assist medically in an emergency? Will there be security on staff to ensure safety? Once you know about the type of staff in the facility, you want to get an understanding of their attitudes and their dedication. Do they seem friendly and understanding? These are individuals you will be interacting with on a daily basis and you want to ensure they can provide you with the highest level of care while making you feel comfortable.

  1. Social Activities. One of the best benefits of living in a senior community is having easy access to social interaction. It’s very important for seniors to stay social! What activities are offered? Is there a gym, library, recreation center, chapel, or other similar facilities in the community? Do they host events? If you can, try to arrange a visit during a time when they are hosting an activity. This will allow you to get an idea of the kind of fun you will enjoy.

You will also want to look around at the current residents. Do they seem happy? If you can, pull them aside to ask what they think of the facility. You will definitely want to have some inside information from a current resident.

No matter which facility you choose, remember that this will be your home for a number of years. Trust your instincts, if it does not seem like the right fit for you, then move on to another option.
