Connecting Seniors and Kids

For seniors, keeping an active mind and lifestyle is important for overall better health. A recent trend in senior care, is pairing seniors with young children. There are great benefits to both for this developed relationship!

Without a job or even a family close by, seniors can feel as though their life a little unfulfilling. By connecting with and building a relationship with children, seniors find a sense of purpose again. This makes them feel more excited and engaging.

Here are some fun ways that seniors and kids can bond with each other:

  1. Telling stories. Seniors have lived a long life and have lots of stories to tell! This is a great learning experience for kids. (They will be in awe of a life pre-internet). Plus, seniors can reminisce on happy memories, which is great for cognitive function.
  2. Learn a new skill. Seniors and kids each having something to the one another! Seniors can teach kids how to knit, crochet, fish, or bake. Kids can teach seniors about technology like how to use a smartphone or tablet.
  3. Reading to each other. Seniors can help kids learn to read or kids can showcase their reading skills. It can be a great way to bond.
  4. Do an activity together. Scrapbooking, gardening, or baking can be a lot of fun! Especially for kids that might not get the chance to do these things at home, it is a great learning experience and seniors get to share some of their talents.
  5. Telling jokes. Kids love jokes! And laughing is infectious and excellent way to relieve stress and feel happy.

The bond between seniors and kids can be mutually beneficial. Many kids might not have a place to go after school or they do not have a grandparent to connect with. For seniors, it is excellent to bond with a youthful spirit that can liven up their days.
